Why matching details matter
When Google decides which local businesses to show, it is trying to answer a simple question: is this business real, and is it where it says it is? Citations help answer that. Each listing on a directory, map or local website is a small, independent confirmation that your business exists at that address and can be reached on that number.
The problem is that these listings build up over years, often without anyone keeping track. A directory might still show an old phone number. A map listing might use a shortened version of your name. One site might list your unit number and another might leave it out. To a person these look like trivial differences. To a system comparing thousands of records, they can look like two different businesses, which makes Google less sure about either.
Consistency matters more than volume. A handful of accurate listings on sites that matter in your area and your industry does far more good than a long trail of half finished profiles. Start with the obvious places: your Google Business Profile, the main map apps, well known business directories, and any trade body or local association you belong to.
Pick one format and stick to it everywhere. If your address includes a unit, a building name or a particular way of writing the street, use exactly the same wording each time. The same goes for your business name. Use your real trading name rather than adding extra keywords to it, because stuffing keywords into a name can break the rules of some platforms and makes the mismatch problem worse.
If you move premises or change your number, update your citations as part of the move, not months later. Old details left online can send customers to the wrong place and quietly undermine the trust you have built.
Finally, make your website the reference point. Put your full name, address and phone number in the footer of every page, and make sure they match your Google profile exactly. When every source tells the same story, Google can be confident, and so can your customers.
